In 1971, graduates of Jessie Baker School found
themselves with very few options after graduation .
Many couldn’t get a job because they didn’t have marketable skills. What
were they to do - stay home and watch television the rest of their
lives?
To answer this
question, some parents worked with staff of the Elk Grove Unified School
District (EGUSD) and established a recycling program in Franklin, CA;
with that, the Elk Grove Adult Community Training (EGACT) program was
established. Soon, a new location was needed, and with the help of the
School District, a long-term site lease was obtained and a metal
building purchased and placed in front of the former Elk Grove
Transportation Department.
In 1990 a
decision was made to end the recycling program a nd
make education the primary focus of EGACT. Soon, EGACT developed the
following mission statement: EGACT’s mission is to provide for the
equality, dignity, and fulfillment of the rights of all program
participants through a community-based program providing
opportunities for individual choice in community and vocational
environments.
Today that
single building has expanded to three, and we have three campuses - two
in Elk Grove and one in Galt. Our 50 staff members provide services for
approximately
130 consumers. Some consumers need full-time assistance.
Visitors are
welcome at any or all campuses. Please call in advance for an
appointment. Our number is (916) 685-7666. |
